Old reliable still producing, and new site's NOT!...so far
Drove the hour trip back to try and catch the farmer that owns an old one room schoolhouse with a freshly cut bean field. It's just down the road from my "old reliable" picnic grounds. I found his wife home and she said I needed to talk to the hubby. I had an hour to kill before he returned, so I headed to the picnic grounds. I usually only dig 3 plus inch targets to get the old ones. This time I tried something different. I went to a small area where I found a concentration of teens Barbers and wheats. I turned the discrimination down to iron reject only hoping for the outside chance for a gold coin or jewelry. I soon had a loud coin hit and thought, how did I miss this? It was 2 inches deep so I probably rejected it last time. Well I dug and at more like 3 inches I pop up a nice '44 Washington. Not far from that I dug a 1957 Washington. Never mind the pull tab pieces and parts and pencil erasers. A 1940 nickel, a 1910 wheatie and a Roosie also came to light.
Then it was time to head back to get permission. The farmer was unloading a shipment of hogs and I cut to the chase, told him what I was going to do and when.
Well not really, I had to sell him on the idea. He finally said yes and off I went.
Two hours later I jad a big rusty chain, a large iron ring(thicker than most), a piece of angle iron, can slaw and a disdain for bean stalks. It's a big field and if my back hadn't started aching I would have stayed longer. I sure do appeciate lawns, but you'll see me back out there.
