Maybe from a Christian organization? I believe that the 4-pointed star may be representative of the cross.

Possibly an inkwell cover a couple students lost? It does have a small bevel where you might hook a fingernail to open it.

My first thought was that it is the lower part of a medal that hung from a ribbon attached to an upper piece that was pinned to your shirt. Not sure what the symbol represents.
