Old schoolyard

Well I was privileged enough to be able to hunt an old school yard this last weekend and while I was only able to be there for 2.5hours I found 2 wheat pennies $.59 in newer coins and what I think is the cream of the crop - an old heavy brass sleigh bell. It has a '4' stamped into it between 2 of the four holes... pretty cool to wonder what happened for it to be there... about 4-5 inches deep.



The bell actually looks better than the pictures suggest







One of the four holes is plugged, the only thing I can think of is that it was done on purpose for sound or it was a defect and didn't break off when it was punched at the factory.

Nice finds. I have yet to find a bell but there is something very cool about them. I put them in the same catagory as old clocks, keys, and locks. What year was the school built?

I have to do some research on the school itself... A friend of a friend owns it and has converted it into a nice little homestead so I have no info on the school itself other than it WAS a school. my MDing friend GUESSED it was built in the 20's... I'll be looking at some old plat books to see if I can narrow it down... unfortunately I live 2 hours from there so I can't just pop in to ask the owner.

Well, I did some research and found the school on an 1887 plat book next to a church that is no longer there. I hope I can get permission to go back there so I can spend some quality time there instead of rushing it.
