Hi I went out to my uncle's bean field that was called French Island before they channeled the Kankakee river.
There is a sand ridge full of old shotgun heads. Last year I found a 1901 v nickel there. someone has been finding indian head pennys there so that was what I was hoping for. so after digging a pocket full of junk I hear a nice high tone and out pops a little round chunk of silver. this is my second seated dime the other was three years ago it was 1883. life is good. dave

That's a lot of,shotgun shells!

Hey I have an old spot that produces shotgun shells like crazy too. It sucks because they produce a signal that you just can't ignore because--you never know right? Congrats on the seated dime!

Possible cause/ effect. Bean fields=prime dove hunting grounds=large numbers of empty shotgun hulls. just an idea from personal experience. Nice finds by the way also!!! Good job sorting through the trash to find the treasure!!!!!

hi mr trooper the Kankakee river was giant marsh they were shooting waterfowl and taking them to Chicago ill. this camp is before 1917 it was a hunters paradise. we went thru Oklahoma in November 2012 to see our grandson graduate basic training at fort sill. it was very nice country I live and grew up on a farm so I like open spaces. 75 mph on the interstate was something new. thank you for your reply. dave

hi mr wheat and mr cache I only dug 1 out of 50 that place is wall to wall shotgun shells. I was trying for high tones. each time I go I dig a pocket full after an hour my back was hurting. you guys have a nice day. dave

man you dug a ton of shotgun shells, pesky little buggers just give that tone that's impossible to ignore

killer seated!!

Very nice condition seated! Congrats.

Sweet Seated Silver, your just reward for digging all of those shotgun heads!! Big Congrats!

That brass-to-silver ratio seems about right. I would dig it the same way, knowing that thin Indian pennies and brass/gold jewelry lurks among the shotgun casings. Congrats on a very nice dime, keep hunting there for more goodies. Sub 8-)

In my patch of shotgun shells, I dug an 1896 Norway 2ORE coin (I live in Canada) a few years ago. It rang in the exact same VDI as the shells. Sigh, now I'm cursed to dig them all haha

I would dig 99 shotgun shells all the time, if I knew the 100th dig would be a seated coin.
