Went home to Tennessee over the weekend to deliver Dad's detector back along with a White's Bomber Jacket. I woke up on Saturday morning and decided to try in a few places that we've found some Civil War goodies already. Being that I've hit a few spots hard because of what we've pulled out of the ground, there wasn't many targets.

But, somehow, after going over it many times I missed this target. At first it rang in at +50-55. Once I got the plug dug, it then started to read as a good dime.

If you notice, it appears to have been thrown in a fire and it is pretty worn for it's age, BUT I'll TAKE IT ANY DAY!!! :)

I spoke with my uncle and he looked through his "Redbook" and noticed that there are a couple of variants of this coin. One 1839 O has a 1838 Reverse side and the other 1839 O has the 1839 Reverse.

I'm not quite sure, but this one appears to have the 1838 Reverse. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
Ian

It may have been in a fire but I found 32 seated coins a couple of years ago on a CW battle field and some of them had the same stains and marks and it was because they had lain under redoak trees since 1864. I think the tannic acid in the leaves turned some of them that color. Everyone told me not to clean 'em other than just useing soap and water no brush. I did like I was told and have kept the integrity of the coins intact. No brush marks or overly shiney. I dont plan on ever selling them but if I need to I will get the most for 'em simply because they aint overly clean. Great find...d2

The 1839 o comes with large, medium or small o. The large o is the same as used on the 1838, yours is the small o variety.

Nice dime..congrats.

Ian,

Nice dime. Not too bad of shape. Silver to boot. You have to love the history of the coin, 168 years worth.

Ed D,

Congrats. I would LOVE to find coins that old. Great finds.
