old spikes, any idea of the age??

036.webpAny idea of the age of these suckers , they are obviously used to wedge in the larger square bar that is broken off inside the drill hole, I have no idea what they are there for , its just kind of a medium sized rock in a valley with nothing else around .037.webp They are about 1/2" square

To me it looks like someones attempt to split a piece of the rock with a homemade plug (wedge) and feather set. I'm guessing the plan to knock off a piece failed because they only had two sets and picked a poor fracture area to do the job and they pounded on the spikes till they bent. They don't appear to be much older then a hundred years to me.

Thanks Tamrock , I dont think there is any reason they would have tried to split this rock given the location but interesting theory , one I did not even think of.

How about them being anchors foa a barbed wire fence or anchors for a tent guide wire.
