old sword

I found this old (dug) sword at an estate sale (actually yesterday). It is all iron. Since the ruler is unreadable, the measurements are--length-approx. 34 1/2" blade width-approx. 1 1/4", guard width at widest portion-approx. 4 1/4".
Just wondering if this could be Civil War and if so, Union or Confederate? Thanks!
