The marks were the blade enters the handle may be more useful.

Welcome to Treasure Net!

If you could add one or two additional photos (of the entire sword and also the handle portion with part of the blade), you may get a quicker ID from some of the sword experts here. . . very cool find!

Boy, you don't make it easy do you?

Blade length, shape, handle wrap, marks on the blade. Calvary swords have more curve than army.

Based on a few inches of the knuckle bow I'd say an Army Foot Officer's sword unless the blade is curved (then calvary), some pre-civil war version. Maybe a Model 1840 or 1850??

Wow.... what a find. I don't know enough about it to guess... Always wanted to find a sword. Nice to hear they are still hidden out there, nearby......

Congratulations on the sword. I got to see and hold a sword from 1812 era the other day, Made by Nathan Starr. It had been recomissioned during the Civil War and used in a Spartanburg Cavalry unit.

Thanks for putting it up here, coolest thing I've seen all day! Also thanks for that website link!

All the ones in my American Revolution book with that style handle, and there are many, are dated 1740-1770

Interesting saber, similar to a model 1840 or 1860 CAVALRY saber but they don't have that little curl on the top of the guard. Some French sabers had this. Maybe a French or Confederate made saber?

Can anyone tell me how old this sword is. The sword was found under a house in Bamberg County,SC and the owner of the house claims it was hidden there from Sherman's troops?
Such a find just has to give you the shakes even if momentarily and the mind racing...! Seems to me you ought to seek professionals for an appraisar. Also keep in mind that Antiques Roadshow might feature you should you get to one of their tour locations. Having the scabbard and the condition being excellent I'd guess that it might be worth approximately $35,000-$60,000 if not higher. The numbers, etc., are nice 'n' sharp and will help identify its source. But whatever you do, don't clean it or do any maintenance. Leave it as found, just protect it by storing it in a blanket or have a box built for it with a foam cutout to the shape. That puppy will buy a top-of-the-line detector with a thousand frequencies! Hell, you might be able to afford someone to operate the detector and dig for you!

Does the scabbard have a seam or is it a complete tube?

I just got a message from Civil War sword dealer:

This sword is a European imported cavalry sabre. It could have been used by
the Union or the Confederacy, but also could have been used by a European in
some war overseas. In this condition, it would retail for $250 - $400.00. We
would have no interest.

Since they did give a price range and did NOT offer to buy it, it is probably a good estimate. Now if he had offered to buy, then that's a different story.

If European and could be dated or proven to be a C.W. Import with proper research it would sell for quite a bit more than 400.00 Beat up M 1860 US sabres are approaching 1000.00 Do your home work and take lots of pictures. My guess it's a CW import from Europe for use by the belligerents( pick one) It could be a sleeper. Don't clean it, just a bit of light oil and a dry place until you know what it is.
