Yes, the trunk has seen better days. Still pretty cool in my book. No, idea what the "V" mark stands for. But it looks like original Mark when it was new ??

I believe it's a "V" for Victory...a phrase and logo used for WWII war bonds and other advertising. Google "red V for victory" and you'll see numerous images like yours.
 
I second the "V for Victory." Cool item!
 
Definitely looks like a Military trunk used in ww1 ww2 and Korean war.
