old wells

anyone tried scooping in old wells? using long pole and sand scoop. any ideas?

I haven't hunted wells but I have had good luck hunting and digging out old cisterns and have come up with some good bottles from the late 1800 and I haven't gotten

to the bottom yet.

I'm planing on another cistern dig at an old 1870s train switch station soon befor the snakes get to moving.

Good luck with you well but they are a little to narrow for me.

Snakes give me the creeps. I haven't hunted old wells but are you talking about one that still has water or one that has filled in? Reason I ask is you can buy some pretty powerful magnets nowadays and hook one to a rope and drop it in the water for any ferrous relics or metals. Might be worth a try. I assume a filled in well would just be an excavation done with extreme caution since so many ditch cave-ins, etc. kill people every year. Jim Cal

I've been digging filed in cisterns the one me and my boys have been doing the most digging in is on the hill here at home where I found the Civil war stuff ,
My dad told me he can remember back in the 30s it had steps going into it so to tell the truth it might have been a cellar or converted into one.
anyhow dig it all out from wall to wall this one has brick walls.we have only gotten 5ft deep and then came all the rains and now its a cistern with watter.
I'll move the rattle snakes you move the black widows.

I am waiting to see if anyone has found anything too. I have access to a community well lined with native stone from the late 1800's. It is still intact and capped for safety. I have always wondered what could have been dropped into it. I won't go in, but I have been thinking of a scooping device myself.

We cleaned out the well at our deer camp a few years ago (still had water) and found an old bucket, well pulley, and misc bottles. This one was brick lined and showed considerable craftmanship so we felt semi-safe in doing it. Let us know what you find in this one. Jim Cal
