Older than "Colonial Copper" - UPDATE

On my way up to visit my brother in southern Wisconsin this past Friday, I spent 1-1/2 hours
metal detecting before my hunt was terminated >:( by the high winds and heavy rain. . .

When I found this, my initial thought was that it was a piece of scrap metal but when I saw the
the oxidized-copper patina, wishful thinking entered my mind that this may possibly be related
to the "copper culture" period in the Wisconsin/Michigan area.

I posted this in the "American Indian Artifacts" section of the forum and some members suggest
that this may be a copper celt. . . if it is, this will be my best find ever.

UPDATE:
Yesterday I received confirmation from two archeologists that this is
indeed a copper Celt (cold and/or hot hammered) that was likely made
and/or used sometime between 4,000 BC and 500AD.

Many thanks to everyone for your kind comments and suggestions.
(and yes, I'm still on cloud nine)

Awesome find!

That's one thing WI has going for it--the best odds of the oldest metal finds in the U.S.

Not to ask you to give anything away but what kind of site was that found at? Riverbank or otherwise near water?

I found it probably 30-meters from a stream. . . as to whether that stream was there 3,000 years ago. . . ???

Both are amazing finds!

Re: Older than "Colonial Copper" - UPDATE

Most excellent relic, watercolor! WTG!

It's amazing how the older Native American relics can make any coin look relatively "young." My daughter found a knife blade last spring helping me pick rocks from a new garden. Via pics on the Internet, I was told by an archeologist it was likely around 8,000 years old. Beats any of my old coins by quite a few thousand years.

Keep digging!

Re: Older than "Colonial Copper" - UPDATE

Can someone educate me as to what a "celt" is?

wow. neat. i wouldn't have known what it was if i found it either.

Thanks for your comments. . . when I found this piece, it took awhile for me to realize
what this really was. After I got home a few days later, I got some valuable research leads from
some TNet members here on the forum (this TNet forum is a WEALTH of knowledge )

July 8th, is the big day. . .

I'm meeting the State Archeologist at the site (per his request) where I found this Celt so I guess it
could be an interesting day. . . but, I'll still remain optimistic :)

I'll be taking my camera with so if the weather cooperates (rain is forecast), I'll take some pics that I can post
when I get back the next day.

Thanks again for all your kind words & support,
watercolor

Re: Older than "Colonial Copper" - UPDATE

Please forgive my ignorance but what is a copper celt and what was its purpose and how as it used. iI looked it up on line but all I found was other sites showing other ones that have been found. Maybe someone can help me?
