I was watching the Cincinnati Bungles today..worthless game in a worthless season. Went out to get some more wood for the fire and thought....it's not too bad out, maybe I can get one last hunt in. Well, I'm glad I did. Worked a small soccer field in my usual large sports complex. Keep in mind, I've pulled over 1300 coins from this complex this year and the oldest coin I've ever found was a 1916 D wheatie and not one silver coin. Well, I'm finding the usual clad and I get a hit with a VDI of 82 at about 4 inches on my DFX. Thinking I'm digging anyother penny or dime, I pull the plug and in the lower end of the plug, surprise!! I pull out a coin that's larger than a quarter. I carefully wipe it off, thinking maybe its a medallion or token but I can't make out anything cause it's getting dark. So I finish the field and head for home wondering what that coin is. When I get it home, I ran some water over it to wash off the dirt, looked at it under a magnifying glass and saw the words ONE CENT. My heart skipped a beat and I turned it over and saw the outline of a woman's face with a liberty band across her head and a date of 1829 at the bottom. Now I've never seen a LC except pictures on this forum....didn't even know they exited until this year. I always thought they were found in the eastern US. SO WOW!!!! Here's the picture. Sorry I couldn't get it any clearer than that. Anybody know how much it's worth? Should I try and clean it better?

HEY , CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST COPPA... NO DON`T TRY AND CLEAN IT...... YOUR BETTER OFF NOT CLEANING IT WITH WATER. JUST USE YOUR FINGERS, AND NAILS TO GET SOME OF THE PETINA OFF IT... WASHING IT WILL LOOSE THE HIGHLIGHTS AND EXPOSE THE PITTING THAT TAKES PLACE DUE TO CORROSION.
JUST RUB THE DIRT OFF IT THE BEST YOU CAN.......( DON`T DO THIS WITH SILVER THOUGH ).......PACO.... BDD

WTG!!.I had the same thing happen to me.I was detecting an athletic field I had done many times before,a field I had'nt even found a Wheatie, when a pulled a deep dateless Draped Bust LC.I was shocked. It shows you that you never can tell what you are going to dig at any location.

Nice Copper. Congratulations on your first.

That's sweet man! I'm still waiting to find my first large cent.

Congratulations and really, you should not be too surprised, Ohio does have Large Cents :)

Still a tad hard to tell by the photos, but I would suggest to get about 10-15 cotton swabs, some warm water, a lamp, and either some vaseline or bee's wax.

Wet the coin, and take very wet and continued keeping wet the cotton swaps and gently work on the areas that appear dirt filled. You can tell by how much dirt comes off onto the cotton swab on letting you know when to stop. IF you think it is starting to "rub" off detail, stop doing it in that area. DO NOT RUB TOO HARD< EVER

Don't forget to do the rim area (edge) You would be surprised how much dirt remains on the edges of coins.
Your coin from the photo look fairly good, so perhaps it will come out looking decent for a ground found. It sure is in better condition than a lot of the finds from fertilized fields. :)

After you think you got most of the dirt off without doing any detail lost, rinse well, if you have distilled water, I would put it in a little plastic dish and let it sit for an hour or so, then thoroughly dry under a desk lamp. Once dry, take a little Vaseline or Bee's Wax (melted) and thoroughly coat the coin. Then you can wipe off all excess and even use a toothbrush on a coin like that to remove the excess.

That is basically what I did with my last 1740 KGII copper. It is basically worth nothing, so I tried to clean and preserve it for long term storage without further damage.

The 1829 would be only a grab bag worth coin.(5-20est) It would have to be in immaculate not corroded condition to get excited about as far as value goes, but finding your first Large Cent metal detecting is priceless! Keep it, be proud of it and find some more!!!

That's what I was like almost 2 weeks ago when I found my Fugio cent. Didn't know what it was and was impatient. I cleaned the coin with Noxon (bad idea) and severely damaged the VALUE (could have possibly easily been worth over $1000) of the coin not to mention precious lost detail. Now I'm regretting it. That was a hard lesson to learn and I can't say I wasn't warned up front. Don't clean any possibly valuable coin unless you know what you are doing. Another lesson I learned - Don't clean old copper coins with electrolysis.

Congrats on your large copper ;D. Aren't they just a ton of fun to find??

Nice find, it's about a $25-30 Coin in G Grade, unless you can determine it has medium lettering instead of large lettering. Medium lettering would make it about a $75 coin in G conditon...........Happy Hunting!!
