On Purpose or Random?

I found this hook-looking curvy nail thing lodged inside the mouthpiece of a pretty old bottle. Did this happen by accident, or did someone put it there for some sort of purpose?

I am pretty sure that is part of a bottle stopper. I believe there was a thread in the last month to 6 weeks where one of the "smart-folks" (we know who they are) not only ID'd the person's find but posted a photo of an old advertisement by the manufacturer. I will search and see if I can find it for you.
