Hit a couple of spots over the weekend and came up with a different kind of assortment. I ended up with 5 war nickels. I've found war nickels before, but this just seemed a bit unusual to come up like this. One came from a school yard and the others came from a heavily pounded park. The Indians, large cent and the earlier mercs and 1883 V nickel came from the same park. Shame the 1878 Indian was so toasted as it's a better date. The other 2 mercs and 1911 V nickel came from the school yard. Also pulled a 1943 steel cent. Haven't dug one of these in years. When I first started detecting 35 years ago you would occasionally dig one that still had some detail. Nowadays it seems you only get a steel disk.

Very nice weekend hunting! Love the finds! You are right on the war nics, I thought it strange when I found 4 from one site over a couple of weeks, but to find 5 in one weekend is strange. While they are not rare, the 4 year mintage would make me think that you beat some pretty strong odds to accomplish that.

Yeah David, it is uncommon to find so many war nickels. I think a lot of people ignore the signal as it doesn't ring nickel because of the silver and doesn't ring silver because of the nickel. Hence it reads like a pull tab to most.

I like the silver nicks too, but would rather the Barber and seated coinage : )
