...to be out hunting in this extreme heat.

But, it certainly helps! :tongue3:

Went to another school ground today and had an interesting day:

The usual suspects. ;) Would you believe?
That almost that entire pile of pennies is from 1965-1978?

But, did manage a nice wheatie. Not too terrible for coming from 8 inches down!
In hard packed, hot, dry ground! :BangHead:

I figured just another kid pin and it is but...

2016 (502).webp

This pin seems to be pretty well constructed! :)

I wonder, does anyone else do this? It was
early in my walk and what I like to do sometimes
is to use something akin to an archaeological dig.

Not a true one but I take a few extra pains on a target,
(has to be a pretty high VDI ), that I think might be special.

I just want to take the hole down to the target in such a way
as to get to it intact. Still oriented as it has been buried for
all those years. I take special notice as to the sound it made,
the depth reported and the VDIs given. After I get down to it,
I check to see if I figured right and try to remember the orientation and other
items in the hole. Sort of learning to understand more about what my machine
is trying to tell me.

Like this one and several other finds today. The ground was very, very dry but
the ground balance was only about 80, usually it's around 90 in my areas. Still,
the signals were particularly clear today. At least they were before the heat stroke. ;)

Anyway, finally, a dime just "the other side... of 1965. ;)

Everybody appears happy. :dontknow:

Thanks everybody, for your support and for taking the time to peek.

Nice. You dig one wheat and find silver. I've dug about 30 this week from one school and no silver

Well, you know how that works. Where there's wheats, there's silver. (or maybe, there used to be silver. ;) )

Actually, I'm figuring to be in your neck of the woods soon, maybe I'll give it a try. Actually, going fish fishing. :)

Stay cool!

Then, I must be nuts.........so my wife said when I went out the door........"In this heat?".............
Dedication.........that's what it is!!
I try the to do the same with pinpointing and depth.......I don't have any numbers to guide me........just sound. I hate digging big holes...........

Very nice silver and wheat for you today, WHADIFIND!! Congrats on the finds and defying the hot sun............:notworthy:

I've found four silver coins and over 50 wheats there in the past few weeks. Either someone was impossibly good at cherrypicking or these kids held on tight to their lunch money

Congratulations on your finds. Nuts is my normal. Can't not dig.:tongue3:

Congrats on your finds and I think we are all nuts but I really enjoy this hobby

Looks like it was a nice hunt Whadi.

Although silver might be easier to be cherrypicked, if they're leaving behind wheat cents they're also leaving behind lots of other good targets. The pattern nowadays is to be on a road assault to find places to hunt. It leads to many bad habits as far as the hobby as a whole is concerned. Like, left trash, less than kosher plugs, grabbing all the silver (and leaving the gold behind :dontknow: ). They don't care on any long term effects cuz they don't figure to be back. They blow in, permission be damned, (after all they are "pirates" right? At least until they show up as a bookeeper on Monday.

Rest assured, if you are getting 50 signals as good as wheaties give, they've left plenty. I don't know about you but I'll gladly take any gold coin/ring over ALL the silver likely to be cherrypicked. That technique has a great fallacy built into it, it assumes that they are getting the "good" targets and skipping over all the "bad" ones. After all, who could EVER want wheat cents?!? Right?! ;)

Keep showing them! :)

Nice job gary, that silver was well earned!

Very nice hunt! Both Fishy and Blingie seen content with the recovered goodies. :occasion14:

Boy, that brings back memories! Back when I started in the 70's, I had a Garrett Groundhog, (still do...still works! :) ). It did have a meter on it but I did EVERYthing by sound on that one! I could tell between a nickle and a pull tab with it!

Also, I dislike large holes. I think every detectorist should be required to retrieve some targets with just a screwdriver. Just so they'd learn proper pinpointing! My plugs are generally about 3-5 inches across and almost never miss my pinpoint now. There's a risk, might hit the target, (rarely do). But, the ground is kept soooo much nicer!

Keep cool!

Hey,

I figured out some stuff about your pin but I don't actually read Japanese so I don't have the full details.

It seems like there's this trend in Japan where different localities have a set of souvenir "pins" that come out of gumball machines. I think yours comes from machines the city of Kobe, Japan. Specifically, I think it has something to do with ones that are obtained from machines in the lobby of a specific Sheraton Hotel.. but the problem is, the name isn't translating very well to English and it's been difficult for me to figure out the connection. You can search "ヨンタワーズ", which is the back copyright, and it will bring up pictures of the machine and hotels. This microscopic picture shows a brochure for the set yours is from:

Second row, far right. Sorry it is so small.

The "character" on the front is ビリケン. Which, apparently was created by an American.. according to the Wikipedia article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billiken

It is also the mascot of Saint Louis University: What is a Billiken? : Saint Louis University : SLU

As far as more information on the pins goes, I'm having a hard time getting the English name of the pins. Google has translated something to the effect of "Your Local Pins" a couple of times, but searching that in English has not been fruitful. Either I haven't found the general names of these things yet or they aren't a fad among Japanese culture fans in the US.

All I know is, there is some sort of collector base for them in Japan. It might be similar to collecting souvenir spoons in the US but targeted to a younger audience.

If the pin really does come from the lobby of a specific hotel in Japan, there's probably a good chance that either it was something a parent got for a kid while on business in Japan and brought back, or someone from Japan, probably a kid, dropped it where you found it. It's just kind of obscure in my opinion, like whoever owned almost certainly had been to that hotel at some point, otherwise owning it would seem weird. The only exception might be if for whatever reason you are in St. Louis near that college. It might be a "thing" for students to purchase ironic memorabilia of their school mascot.

Obviously this is a lot of speculation, but I think it's all on the right track. I just don't speak Japanese so it's hard to tease out the exact details.

Hope that helps.

Nice job getting out in the heat and collecting a great bunch of goodies! Silver & wheats!

Of course the info gained is gold (helps you to find gold!).

I think the silver dime has been claimed....by the Blingester!
Fishy can now say he's a globe trotter, with the pin to prove it!

I try to get as much info as i can before i dig (its remembering it all thats the problem!). I think i need to take notes in the field!

The interesting stuff comes up sometimes as a wheat cent reading, always a lower VDI number.
I was checking out a lot of lower readings today too.
There was some weird readings from the iron that got a little wet from the quarter inch of rain, never had that happen before.
It does help if you can take your time.

Nuts or not, you scored a silver Rosie, Congrats on getting out and rescuing him from an early grave. :occasion14:

for many days including today it was 90 degrees or higher in Connecticut. Too hot even to go the ocean beach.

Not sure it helps!?!? Can't get the exact detail!?!?
Maybe an original fingerprint of the original craftsman, lifted from the piece
would get you closer????! WOW!

Thanks for ALL that help! :)
