I got out recently one last time as it looks like the field hunting season has finally come to an end. I spent the majority of the time looking for a new trash pit at an early site that had given up some nice stuff about 3 years ago. Even though I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I did get into a few pottery shards, pipe stems and bowl, and a few buttons. First 3 pics show the results of that hunt.
Also, I wanted to use this as an opportunity to show a couple pics of some of my finds from the 2011-12 season. This was definitely an unexpectedly successful year for me. Even though I was only officially recognized with one banner find this year, I consider the whole season as banner as I was fortunate enough to have walked over many outstanding finds in the last few months. I ended the prior season without any real promising prospects, and wasn’t sure where I’d be hunting this year. But after a little research, great success with getting permissions, a lot of luck including a chance encounter with a property owner, and many hours in the field, I was able to recover a great quantity of mostly colonial artifacts, and some very nice quality relics and coins as well. My main objective, as always, is to recover as much colonial silver as possible and I did good in that department this year with 15 coins including another hammered sixpence. And some of the best buttons I’ve ever dug came to light as well including a beautiful early Corps of Engineers, and Kentucky & Virginia state seals. I was also able to finally recover 3 early dated wine bottle seals which had been on my most wanted list for quite some time. And to top it off I dug a gorgeous 1852 $1 gold piece and US boxplate. So although my year started out on a down note things turned around quickly. So don’t ever get discouraged as when you least expect it a killer site will pop up and your fortunes take a quick change for the better. Just takes a little hard work and persistence. Good luck to everyone!!
