We spent a week fishing and camping near Fort Bragg a couple weeks ago. We put out 3 crab traps over 5 days and only caught one legal crab. The seas were high though so we couldn't put the traps out into very deep water.

Pretty crabby looking there.

That's bigger then any crab I'd catch off a pier on the Frisco Bay many moons ago. I lost interest in trapping crap in a very short time of trying my hand at it. I found it better to head down to the wharf for a all ready to enjoy crab sandwich instead.

Bait could also be a reason for declining catches...Mackerel works great...

As y'all know, Dungeness Crab Season ends June 30th...Darn!

Great eating...we ate at least a crab each, per week, during the prime period...

In Humboldt County, our active commercial crabbing ended early this season due to low consumer pricing by retailers.

Commercial boats couldn't afford the expenses...fuel costs more than the catch sold for...

Now importing from Oregon....

we used chicken in 2 of the traps and abalone guts in the 3rd one. This crab was attracted to the abalone. There were all kinds of crab around the dock we were moored at but all of them were undersize. Yeah, we're upset about the season closing on the 30th as well. We are going back down for a few days fishing in July but we can't crab. We should do well on lingcod, cabazone and bottom fish but we also want to get some salmon. So far it has been slow there but the seas have been rough and not many are getting out to fish.

Pick me up on the way...I'm in Ferndale just south of Eureka (2 hours to

From Oregon border)

What's the story of the Sea life there with the effects of Fukishima?

GOD Bless

Cat food PB, cat food. :cat: :laughing7:
Need a few cans of cat food. Poke a few holes in 'em, throw 'em in the traps. And whadua mean chicken, you mean chicken carcass right?, Yous is suppose to eat the chicken and give the crabs what's left.
Least, that's how we do it in Florida. :laughing7:
Ya'll lucky ya'll didn't starve! :laughing7:

I get fish heads/waste from the cleaning stations. Works Great!! Free too.
And when you get an octopus in your trap, local fish market will smoke them for you!
Smoked octo is great!
