I started into metal detecting over 50 years ago, when my brother put together a Radio Shack model. It did not work very well.
Due to marriage, kids and health problems, I have been out of the hobby for years. It seems things have changed a lot. Detectors have really advanced. Water proofing is becoming more common, although you would consider it a no-brainer.
It seems there are more companies too. High end and low end.
SO, the point of my post is aimed at Keith. All of his detectors seem to be Makro. Why?
I have owned various high end detectors. Garretts Grand Master Hunter CXIII, Spectrum XLT, Minelabs too. I currently have Fishers. A CZ 70, a 1280 Aquanaut and a M66. Also, a Garrett GTAx 550.
How does Makro stack up against the others?
I like useful features, but it can be misleading. You can pay a lot for whiz bang features and still get bad performance.
Why detectors do you guys rely? Why? What manufacturer do you prefer, and why? I see tons of low cost Chinese detectors, are they any good?

Low cost Chinese detectors are no good because........they are low cost Chinese detectors. You usually get what you pay for. hunt with your Minelab.

I have had a few detectors over the years. The build quality of Nokta/ Makro is refreshing. My son has the Garrett AT pro and it feels like junk. I'm not saying it performs like junk because it does not. But, Garrett needs to do a better job at building a housing that is AT worthy.

Like Ammoman said, the build quality of the Makro/Nokta line is fantastic. The AT Pro is a nice machine, but the build quality and aesthetics are just way behind the curve. I still cant figure out the butt ugly AT MAX and why they wouldn't release a better looking or at least more balanced detector. I just sold my AT Pro to justify the Kruzer purchase. The AT Pro gave me terrible tennis elbow, and I had to send it out for repair after a water hunt, that was ok, it was under warranty and repair was done fast, but to me you shouldn't have to send back a water detector after 1 year of use because it had water damage! The Makro Racer 2 and Kruzer are beautiful well balanced, well built, well priced, grab and go detectors, but they also have a bunch of features that let you customize tone break and sound as well as different search modes for different types of hunting, and they are deep seeking detectors. Now that the Racer 2 is priced at $499.00, there's a better reason to check it out. If that weren't enough the service after sale is second to none.

P.S. The only Whiz Bang feature i didn't use on my Makro Racer 2 was the flashlight, but that was done away with on the Kruzer.

I agree with y'all on the AT Pro. Over the years it has been an excellent machine for me in terms of finding relics & coins. I have nothing bad to say about that part because it has more than made me happy countless times. However since I have owned my AT Pro since its inception, the arm cuff has broken 4 times if I remember right. Garrett always sent me a new one free of charge and they finally beefed it up a couple years ago but it was still a hassle. Then a while back the main housing pegs broke off where it secures to the stem. I'm thinking this happened due to fatigue over the years and the plastic became somewhat brittle. I ended up using longer screws and paid close attention to make sure they did not screw up into the housing where it could damage the chip board or battery compartment.

Once again I cannot speak badly about the AT Pro because it definitely made me happy countless times but I am seriously considering this new Multi Kruzer. I have seen a few videos on it and the recovery speed is excellent. Folks speak about how well it is made and easy to swing over several hours. Plus being waterproof is a huge plus for me since I hunt in creeks, rivers and lakes. I would love to hear anymore likes or dislikes about the Kruzer before I make the purchase though. Thanks in advance.
