Last year I lost my favored Buck knife, and with the snow about gone here I thought I would get my first outing to that spot and look for it.
I was digging all signals over 40 on the AT, and a mid fifties at 8" got me going. Unfortunately this spot has not gotten sun yet, so at 6" I hit frozen ground. My method for this is to use my sharpened screw driver as a chisel, and bang on it with my shovel. At 3/8" wide I do not get much with each chunk, but finally the signal was out of the hole. Looking around I saw the unmistakable round edge of a silver coin - great!
Then I saw it - not so great.

Oops - a half inch over and I would have had a nice coin.

Oh well, a Liberty on my first outing ain't all bad.
