Hello everyone! My name is Danny and I am new to this forum. I am a 36 year old NYPD Sergeant and I'm getting back into metal detecting after a 10-15 year hiatus.

I started (and finished) with a Tesoro Silver Sabre. Very good unit. Lots of nice finds. Still have it and use it every now and then. Recently, my interests have changed back to metal detecting and I am extremely motivated.

I've always found myself drawn to the local beaches with the Tesoro but was never able to go into the water for fear of damaging the unit. I've been traveling a lot lately, mostly to places with beaches. Every time I find myself lying on a beach somewhere in Florida, the Caribbean, etc., I've wished that my Tesoro was with me. Never bought a travel case for the unit. Procrastination I guess.

Going to the Exumas at the end of May and I'm determined to get a good beach/shallow water unit (there goes that procrastination again). Looking to spend $600-$800. Almost all of my detecting will be in and around salt water.

Any help that anyone can give is extremely appreciated. Thanks all!

Headhunter PI by DetectorPro. Best price is $629.00 at www.surfscanner.com. Very sensitive detector, esp. to small gold items. No electronics box-they are built into the headphones! Great, lightweight travel detector. One of the best PI units around for the money.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I appreciate the help. It looks like I'm going to spend a little more and go with the Minelab. Took your advice, Minelab1000, and called KellyCo. Roger was more than happy to answer all of my questions.

Minelab1000, if you could give me any information on the pro's and con's of the machine, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Been using the Excalibur 1000 for years and have had no problem with it. Take good care of it, clean it after every use and you will be happy. I heard stories about the knobs comming off, and indeed I had a louse one. Pulled out the old Allen wrench, and the problem was solved. I use mine for both diving and on the beach, the only downside is that she is a little heavy out of the water, I can live with that.
