Opinions wanted... To scrap or repair this 18k ring... and stone opinions...

Found a few weeks back...
Only mark is 18k...
Is it worth seeking out stone for replacement.. IF even possible... or just pull stones and toss in the scrap ?
What is opinions of what kind of stones...
I say ruby... but have no ruby test... but on diamond test it tests poss.
Wanna hear some opinions on this from whoever wants to voice one.

That is an old ring, pre 1920s, you can tell by the faceting. A lot of 18 carat rings back then did have real gems in them. I wouldn't dismantle it, maybe see what you can get on ebay?

Take it to a jeweler and get their opinion on the cost of a matching stone. Shouldn't be all that expensive.

Have you talked to a Jeweler yet? Asking for identification from a picture is very iffy. Identifying the settings would be the first priority before deciding on what to do with the ring as it could have a great value, or not. If the settings are real and have value I personally would have the ring restored to maximize its value before testing the market. Then again, my wife would probably confiscate it as contraband (as long as I claimed it) and I would be out the cost of restoration/stone replacement. But she would be very happy. Its happened before!

It's a great ring and it looks to be garnet... easy to match... good luck...

The stones have a deep color. Hold on to the ring. Price could go up. You can always do what you want with it later on. Sounds like you have a gold scrap pile anyway. Wish I had a scrap pile of gold!!! I just love the workmanship and the old style which you can't replace. If you scraped it. What would you get? $50.00 and stones for something else? I give my rings to family, but only if they fit and have no owner. I would look a little harder at the spot you found the ring at for the other small stones. But it looks like your a water man. What ever you do with the ring. Your ahead of the game. You must be single!! Ha Ha But don't do anything to it until you know what you want to do with it.

Definitely restore it! I hate seeing old gold scrapped, mainly because they come from a time when everything was hand made. Hand-cut stones, hand-etched gold.... someone spent a lot of time creating it for someone very wealthy. To simply say "it's ugly" and melt it down is hideous.

ya bro..I,m with the restore crowd.It has marginal value as scrap.There are jewlers who specialise in estate jewelry,they are the only jewlers I would send photos to for advice.
I sold an 18 k daisy ring that made yours look conservative to an estate jewler for 345.00...scrap would have been 160.00

besides...you can always whip that sucker out and win any"most gaudy"arguement !!

I would restore that puppy in a heart beat, there is something about it that just grabs your attention.

I'm a rank amateur about such things, but I do know that in the late 19th century, garnets, the gaudier the better, were quite stylish. If I were to bet, I would bet those are garnets, thus, easy (and relatively cheap) to replace. I would take it to a reputable estate jeweler for a good look-see.

Take it to a business that specializes in jewelry repair, not to a fancy jeweler or a mall business that has to send it out. The jeweler will tell you if you need the whole ring re-pronged. that would knock the price of repair up. I would think the ring is still worth more alive than dead so I would sell it as before scrapping it.

I'm no expert on jewelry, but it is high K. looks nice, and probably quite old, probably worth the fix, but then again if you plan too sell then you will have to wait for a buyer. To pay what, 2X scrap ? I don't know for sure, but there are a lot of nice rings in pawn shops / coin stores. You'll basically have to weigh what cost to fix times the time to sell for profit against what it is worth to sell as is immediately. You can get all the "opinioins" you want but in the end that will be the choice you have to make.

BTW "maybe" you might get substancially more than 2X scrap, IF you are prepared to wait for the right buyer, and having patience is where the profit is.

Keep it and have it repaired. Its cool looking and its old. Bring it to a jeweler and get and expert advice, but I would keep it and have it repaired.
