I was wondering if there are any other Sox freaks on the board? If so, and if it's okay to have an off-topic thread, let's share some thoughts about the team and the new season. Or even Yankees fans, by all means let me have it ;D

Super fan here. I'm in the North Shore area and listen to WEEI faithfully. They both cover the games and have great discussions about the sport in general.

The sox this year are certainly better off than last year, with regards to pitching, although, with old-timer Timlin hurt and out of practice, that may hurt us, but Papplebom is a kid wonder! I'm still unsure about Becket... and Dice... Wakefield is consistant and a necessary person on the roster for relief. Bob Uker once said, "How do you catch a knuckle-ball? Easy.. wait until it stops spining on the ground, then pick it up".

I can't wait to get rid of Manny. I'm sick and tired of his shenanagins.. however, he is amazing at the plate, and without Manny, Pappy wouldn't do much. Most pitchers would probably just pitch around Pappy if it wasn't for the fact that Manny is up next.

I love Ukie as a person, but I don't like him as a player. As for the rest (lowell, Tek, crisp and alike), I don't know. I have to be honest.. I don't think the team as it sits today is ready to go all the way. They just don't seem to be the same type of family as they were when they went all the way. Now, they seem like a sold team, but disconnected.

Go Sox!
Yankees SUCK!
A-Rod is the anti-christ and Jeeter is his ... well.. let's just say, Lover.

What do you mean Yanks suck............they're the greatest. ;D I am anti-red Sox, but, being a Yankee fan, I better be. Actually, I love when the two teams get together. If it weren't for the Yanks vs. Red Sox, baseball would be boring. When they both meet in the playoffs.....................that is the World Series to me.

I have a lot of Red Sox friends and we're always zinging each other. I always keep in perspective that its a game, though I am a diehard.

As for A-Rod...............standby, he's gonna haunt you this year. If you get rid of Manny, not only do you get rod of a Yankee killer, you lose your Ortiz/Ramierez punch, and that would be the end of your American League East run.

Your pitching looks good. We're hurting in that dept. We need to get rid of Scott Proctor. Every time he comes in to the game, I'm looking thru my fingers hoping he doesn't get clobbered, but it doesn't work. He's our Tavarez.

When all is said and done, we'll have the AL East locked up again.. ;D ;D

red sox and yankee feud goes back further than baseball. actually new york massachusetts feud. border disputes. kiddrock33

Hey what a nice surprise, I was a little skeptical about the response to a non-TH thread.

Groove, we do NOT want to get rid of Manny. Let him cry in the offseason all he wants about his lack of privacy in Boston...then he can go blow his nose on a hundred dollar bill, as long as he bats around .300 and drives in 100 runs. And I agree that the rotation looks good...don't give up on Tavarez yet, I think he's a far better starter than he is a reliever, and he hasn't had much of a chance yet this year. I wish Timlin would just go away already....but maybe he'll surprise us with a good year.

I agree that the team seems a bit disconnected right now, but it's early in the season, and I'm already seeing that start to change. The runs are starting to pile up. One thing I have concern about is that they don't give up on Dustin Pedroia too soon...he's been so hyped in the farm system the last few years, I'd hate to see him not get a fair chance to prove himself. It's hard not to notice Cora though, it seems like whenever he does play, he does something.

And Don....you are right, the Yankees do NOT suck. However, they did CHOKE. Soem Sox fans would say that calling it a Yankees choke takes away from what the Sox did...but I disagree with that. You can't have the greatest comeback in history without the greatest choke in history, it's that simple ;D With any luck, the Yanks pitching will continue to break down. I see you have some kid from the minors starting his first major league game tonight...good luck with that one.

Kidd...your part of town is a pretty good mix of Sox/Yankee fans. I have a friend from Connecticut, and she says the state's baseball alliance is split right down the middle.

The next two weekends will tell us something about these two teams. We have 6 games to play! Schill goes Friday night I think, with Matsuzaka and Beckett on the weekend...I can't wait.

Yup
They didn't bring up Phillip Hughes, who I thought they would, instead, they brought up a AA ball player. We'll see how he fairs.

Right now the best that we can do is hope the offense keeps our heads above water. We were in the same boat last year, injuries early on, then we got better. It was opposite for the Sox. You guys started getting injuries toward the end of the season and I think it did you guys in.

We need a rubber series in the playoffs. I'm still depressed about the 3 game collapse. :P Probably the same feeling as Sox felt when Aaron hit the homer. We gotta even this thing out. ;D

i think pittsfield stole cooperstown thunder as the first place baseball was played. through old records in pittsfield from 1790 's they mention a new law saying the game of baseball can not be played in town anymore due to the fact that the stained glass windows were too precious to allow baseball near them. this has been noted by the hall of fame. i just thought i would mention this. not really pertinant to this thread . but just adds to the ny mass feud doesnt it. kiddrock33

i try to watch the phillies but they are disgusting. ::)

Everyone is right about Manny... your dammed if you keep him, dammed if you get rid of him. I think that he is an amazing player on offense. His RBI's and HR production is amazing and consistant. Sadly though, he SUCKS on defense. We've all watched Manny sort of TROT after a fly ball and miss... or dive for a ball and fall head over heals. Or what about the time that during a Pitcher change, he goes in the Green Monster to take a pee and just barely makes it back on the field for the first pitch.

I think that I tend to look at the Red Sox as I do the Patriots. I tend to hold them to the same standards of mature behavior. We all know that Belichick holds his team to a high standard of moral behavior, both on and off the field. I think that we have all noticed that you don't hear much of anything from that encampment.

Yet, you look at the Red Sox, and there certainly are players that just can't stay out of the News. We all know who they are, yet, others stay behind the scenes and don't allow themselves to get into that. Sadly though, this makes for the best kind of talk. Because we hear so much, there is so much to talk about and debate, versus the Patriots.. all you can keep saying is "He's a genious.... They are great.... yes, they missed a few passes, but overall, Brady was amazing..."... same stuff each week. Not with the sox.. I mean, what was it, two months ago Manny was on E-Bay helping to sell his neighbor's grill??? LOL

I know that alot of this response has nothing to do with baseball in general, but if you think of it in the bigger picture, all of this JUNK that goes on behind the scenes MUST be distracting to the players. And, if a player is in fact distracted by the news, and perhaps the signs in the stand that reference the news, does that have any effect on the batter going 4 for 5 in a game, or 1 for 5?

Tonight the season starts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pettite vs Schilling

Kartens vs. Beckett

New kid vs Dice-K

Yanks 2 outa 3 and move into 1st place............... ;D

OKAY!! Here we are mid-way through the season and the Sox have been the best team in the entire league for the majority of the year so far....however...I am not one to count baseball blessings too soon, and even though an 8 game lead is comfortable, it's not comfortable enough for me.

What do you guys think? Any trade ideas? Myself, I'd like to see Pena, Lugo and Tavarez packaged with one decent prospect (Hansen?) to get a more solid shortstop and/or utility outfielder (depending on who it is). The Wily Mo experiment needs to end yesterday, and either Gabbard or Lester can fill the 5-spot if Tavarez goes.

I totally agree with you. Pena, Lugo, Tavarez do have to go. Although, I think Tavarez did okay as a reliever... but stinks horribly as a starter. Sadly, I wish that Pappi would wake up too. He's really disappointing me this year.

I would LOVE to see Cora get more field time. He seems to be a fantastic all around type of player.

And for Mr. Willy Mo..... last year, I caught a Lowell Spinners game where he was playing (cause he sucked so he was sent down). Well, he only made it to the 4th inning before he was pulled... and wow.. guess how he did at the plate?? He struck out two times. Wow.... amazing. He stinks. Drop him. He's not going to be the next Pappi or Manny... give up Terry... let him go.

Hey Skillets as you can see by my avatar I too am a Red Sox fan. Can't talk a bunch of stats w/you but love the sox!Down 3-1 right now but thats OK,never count 'em out till they're out as the Yanks can tell you from '04.We'll get 'em tonight!!!Bootstrap

Ok....I gotta chime in here. I was in Boston a few years ago. Would love to go back. One of my favorite driving songs......

DROPKICK MURPHYS LYRICS

"Tessie"

Tessie is the Royal Rooters rally cry
Tessie is the tune they always sung
Tessie echoed April through October nights
After serenading Stahl, Dinneen and Young
Tessie is a maiden with a sparkling eye
Tessie is a maiden with a love
She doesn't know the meaning of her sight
She's got a comment full of love
And sometimes when the game is on the line
Tessie always carried them away
Up the road from "Third Base" to Huntington
The boys will always sing and sway

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

The Rooters showed up at the grounds one day
They found their seats had all been sold
McGreevey led the charge into the park
Stormed the gates and put the game on hold
The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from "Third Base" to Huntington
They'd sing another victory song

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from "Third Base" to Huntington
They'd sing another victory song

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Boston, you are the only only only
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Red Sox, you are the only only only

And the Lord said "Go Sox!"

Down 3-1, C'Mon Beckett!!! Then Shilling has to look more like the Shilling of past and not like his last outing, then Dice-K has to finally pitch like he is worth his millions. Then its the Rockies. Cleveland has been the sleeper team all year and never got credit for the awesome team they have, hopefully the Sox got a comeback in them. Colorado has been awesome too, they've woon 21 out of their last 22 games???? awesome.
Regardless...next year the Sox MUST sign Lowell...frig A-Rod..unless they put him at short..then what a batting order that would be!!!!!
Manny is another MUST to keep...it is always an adventure on a routine flyball to left, but his bat is much needed. He actually talked to the media after last game and says he is having fun and looking forward to next year...but that is today, Manny being Manny who knows what he will feel or say tomorrow... ;D
Ellsbury needs to be in right field all year and they need a good backup catcher for Tek is nearing the end. A good lefty starting pitcher is another must.

Line up/batting order for 2008

1. Pedroia 2B
2. Ellsbury RF
3. Ortiz DH
4. Ramirez LF
5. A-Rod SS
6. Lowell 3B
7. Youkilis 1B
8. Crisp CF
9. Varitek C How;s that look?? ;D Opposing pitchers may have alot of sleepless nights thinking of facing that batting order... ;D

My sentiments exactly Mainedigger! But as you said "frig A-Rod"!!!

Well he WOULD look good in a Sox uniform and would be a great bat to add...but NOT at the expense of Lowell...they GOTTA keep him..for his bat, his fielding and most of all...his clubhouse leadership!!!

We won,we won,we won,and Beckett was shamokin'!!Back to Boston now and if the Bullpen can hold it together and the bottom of the order can step up we should get the ALCS championship!Send the Indians home to cry in their wigwams!!!

Well back to Boston for game 6...now, which Schilling is gonna show up, the ace or the slouch??? ???
