Nice piece. Looks like a portion of a worn through mortar.

Nice find. Is it a worn mortar or a stone bowl? What breed of dog do you hunt? I have German Wirehair pointers and English setters. Not many quail left here now. If a covey is found, only a bird or two can be taken. I miss the good ol days!

Nice find nc even hunting your hunting lol

Thanks guys. What are the chances finding the other pieces if I look in the same area?

NC, my dog is a Canam ATV. I ride the forest roads and then hop off when I find them and retrieve it myself. Check out my Quail Hunting Videos...

I certainly will check your videos out. I have heard of hunting on horse back. Dogs were still used along with horses. Are dogs used at all where you live? My absolute favorite part of hunting is watching my dog point. To see the dog hunt like crazy and then bring be the bird to me. Man!! Nothing like that!

Its not as fun as it was back in the 80's and early 90's. Wild birds are rare now. I raised quail for a few years. I stopped because turning hobbies to work, well..... Kills your hobby. Lol!

I will be returning this piece back to where I found it. I'll look around for other pieces and if I find anything I will take some pictures but leave them.

Thanks again

Nice find. Is it a worn mortar or a stone bowl?"

The third picture, showing how it stood sure makes it look a lot like the center is worn through. Bowls wouldn't be worn through imho.

.................they were worn through quite often....I could show you many,if I brought any home through the years but never have...not worth packing home

Why would bowls be worn through? To much scrubbing?

I can understand mortars being worn through. I think you may be confusing bowls with mortars.

Not sure what you are trying to imply but I was very excited to find this, post the pictures and read the positive comments. It was well "worth packing it home" for me. And I took it back to the place I found it today. 4 hours on my ATV and I had a blast the whole time and got a couple of quail on the way back that are going on the BBQ tonight.

Why would worn mortars not become bowls? It seems logical to me.

maybe some were, who knows, maybe for some they had dual purposes and were used for both functions till worn out. Many mortars and metates have been found complete worn through from use. I don't believe the use wear on a bowl (used as we would think of one being used anyway) would have been aggressive enough to wear a hole in the bottom.

Hey canamrider, nothing wrong with artifacts like those, I would have been excited too. You will just have to find them where you can pick them up from now on.

Words come across with no empathy. I'm sure he meant no disrespect. I would have carried the piece you found 5 miles, personally. Stuff like that is rare where I live. I know out west people find stone bowls and mortars frequently. I'm sorry, I didn't catch what state you are in. The pieces out west are not as cherished because that is where the natives were driven. By that, I imply the pieces out there aren't as old as pieces found in other parts of the country. I hope that doesn't hit anyone wrong. That's just my take on the subject. Nice find and enjoy those quail! Send a covey or two flying towards NC!! Lol!

quito,I am not sure what you call a bowl,or a mortar, personally my people
have called them Chamaca rocks........bowl shaped rocks that were used to grind acorns to powder to make a mush which was cooked in baskets. There are litterally thousands of these grinding holes in slabs in many areas where there are rock slabs. In these same areas there are also many "bowls".Along the coast there seems to be more bowls than anywhere I have been.I personally have a fair collection.....my family have a huge number of them and just about every farm/ranch house around here has a good number of them.I recently seen an estate sale here where over 75 were auctioned off....a local antique dealer bought them all...for $25,000.As I said it is not uncommon at all to encounter bowls that have been worn all the way through. They are usually in large groves of Black Oaks, that historically produced the most acorns. The Indians would actually turn the bowls over (so that they wouldnt fill with water, and freeze and crack......we often still find them up turned this way)and leave them in these areas so when they came back to harvest next year they were there. They would carry the pestle with them, and once the acorns were gathered, many were stored in graineries, and the rest were ground into the flour to make mush later. So its perfectly understandable how this wearing through would, and did happen

as said,i dont bring out or photo the broken ones but here just a couple completes I have....the one with the hose going itno it,is actually worn through

When Clear Lake is low there used to be hundreds of broken bowls.....it was said that when a woman died her bowl was broke and thrown in the lake......?I cant find any other explanation for the many I witnessed back in the day

CANAM!!!I DIDNT REALIZE IT CAME OUT LIKE THAT!!!!I AM VERY SORRY!!I did not mean that what so ever.I have spent my entire life around them(I grew up on 12,000 acres)and have worked in the field, very remote areas(Including the Los Padres)as well.I just meant that my yard can not take any more rocks,or iron....actually it probably could....but my wife would end up owning what I have...if you get my drift!I have also got to where I wont carry out the bowls either(not that I encounter them much anymore but have a few....and we have slab mortars with the pestles still in them)I have enough, they dont belong to me and my kids and grand kids can maybe enjoy finding one some day.You did the right thing to legally keep out of trouble.I have never,or would never remove one from public ground....again my deepest apologies.I enjoyed seeing that piece

????Driven here?Trust me our artifacts and history are just as cherished as anybodies...we just have different laws where even innocent people have been subjected to great harrassment and grief,so not much is shared....:thumbsup:Do I pick up every broken point I find? No,there are places where there are hundreds....a guy can only have so much
