I wanna go to the beach :'( ,,,,,,thats a good start.

Re: Outer Banks Trip starts now.....a little digging at the house.

Good start to the vacation. There are a lot of shipwrecks out there that may left you a surprise somewhere. Just make sure you stay out of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore with the detector. The Feds could ruin your time in a hurry.

Where are you on OBX? I found a Spanish Cob last time down there so the old stuff is definately there.

Good luck

I am in Corolla. Hoping to find anything, just looking forward to being out on the sand for the first time :icon_thumright:

There was a shipwreck recently uncovered and moved from the beach up to the lighthouse. I remember reading somewhere that a few old coins were found in the vacinity. Ask around and see if you can find out where it was located on the beach.

My wife & I honeymooned at Corolla, nice place... what we saw of it. ;D

Have fun and keep us updated.

this morning's finds are nothing special. the surprising thing is that the beaches are overly clean, i went over 20 minutes until I actually had a hit! Found a few coins, lots of bottle caps, fishing weight and I joined the club of chuck e cheese haters >:(
Nothing like being 8 inches deep in sand and seeing a gold rim, just to pull it out and see that blasted mouse!

Re: Outer Banks Trip starts now.....a little digging at the house.

If you go to Adriatic and Atlantic there is a public access path onto the beach. There is a wreck on the beach right over the dune. I've never found anything old by the wreck but I know a Virgina Half Penny was found by it. Keep in mind there is no on the street parking so you will have to walk or have someone drop you off if you are not by this location. If you go make sure it is low tide or the wreck maybe under water. I hope it is still visible...this past winter had rough storms which moved lots of stuff around.

My in-laws own the Spanish looking house right across the street from the access path. The house is called Dios Del Sol. They rented it out all season so I will not make it down there until the fall which I prefer when detecting.

If you are looking for modern jewelery and coins try the public beach behind the Food Lion. I usually have success there especially during the summer.

I also heard stories about gold coins being found by the horse fence which is up at the end of the paved route 12 where it turns into a beach access only.

Good luck

They moved this wreck off the beach the first week of April but it first washed ashore in November of 2009. It was moved by different storms a few time over a couple of miles of beach between November and April. The entire beach at Corolla is a great place to look for shipwreck coins.

I found my first dreaded Chuck e cheese token today too. If you can make it down to Buxton I can tell you about a spot that maybe unhunted and one of the highest points on the island. I would love to go down there and MD. Good luck

Re: Outer Banks Trip starts now.....a little digging at the house.

Well, I spent the day scouting out potential spots for this evening. I found a nice spot where there were a ton of people all crowded together on the beach. I started for the spot around 7:45 and got there around 8, just in time to see another man with a detector walking to the same spot, bummer. Rather than bump coils, I spoke with him, wished him luck and turned around dejected. On the way back to the beach house, I saw a public access ramp and thought it might be worth a try. I was right. Started with a strong, but strange signal indicating penny. It was a penny. Scanned the hole again and another penny. This went on for over an hour, until we (my wife's cousin from Kentucky went along and was my sand sifter operator!) had unearthed everything you see below. We had a hole a few feet deep and about 3ft across in all directions. Does this constitue a modern day cache, LOL? One canadian penny, 96 newer pennies, 13 dimes, 2 nickels and 5 quarters. Oh and a matchbox car! The oldest coin was a 1967 quarter, still no silver, bummer! I am exhausted and heading to bed after digging right into the darkness! I'll be headed back in the a.m. sometime when I can see my screen again. Good night all!
