"P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Howdy Yall,

Brother john37115 got the go ahead for us on a new site today. An old school grounds that dates back to around 1850. We had a little less than 2 hours to hunt. The grass was a bit high, so we hit what we could. I'm sure it's been hit in the past but we had fun. Found 3 Wheaties 1920, 1944, 1950, An Old Keen Kutter Pocket knife, what year, I'd like to know but it's really corroded. However, what I'd really like to know more about is the "P" Button, it is 23mm with backmark "Superior Quality" with a star on each side between the words.. I'm thinking it's a Police Button and hoping it's Civil War era. Please let me know what you can about this Button.

Sincerely KirkTN

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Nice digs for only 2 hrs, looks like a good site. Hit it some more.

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Thanks JDD, I plan to hit it again asap.

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Waterbury Button Company who still makes these "P" Police buttons today and MAY have made that one, as they used the term "Superior Quality" from 1875-1935.

Thanks Everyone for replying,

Montana Jim, thanks for the info. You May have solved this for me. This could be the era. However, Check out the pic of this button. The backmark is alot like mine. * Superior * Quality between two rings of dots. The stars between the words on each side look like this button too. This button was cir. 1860 according to the following site. http://www.relicman.com/backsuperior.htm Maybe this backmark was used before the "P" button came along. I'm wonder when the "P" button first appeared on the scene? I've checked out the Waterbury Site, The Dome top "P" button looks like it. Wish I could find some vintage Pics of the button including pics of the backmarks. I wish Waterbury had a portion of their site dedicated to backmark history of their buttons with pics.

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

The stars and circles all have a part in identifying the back mark, or quality mark. Drop Don in SJ a note and ask him if he knows. He has all kinds of cool books... :)

Also... reliceman is a trustworthy sorce of information I think.

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Thanks for the additional Info Sir. I'm trying to get educated on buttons, and I do appreciate your Knowledge and Help!

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

I am not 100% certain, but it does match a circa 1860 backmark of the STEELE & JOHNSON button company. Ref: Plate B-11, Page 90 in Dating Buttons by Warrren K. Tice

Don

I previously thought the P buttons were of a later time frame but never really looked into it, now I have to break out of my shadow box, my one and only one and check that backmark. :-\

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Thank You Don. Let us know what you find Sir. ???

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Well on ebay there does appear to be buttons from that time frame for Police, so most likely it is that backmark, I really did not find Waterbury Button Company backmark of this type in the book. So Steele and Johnson it most likely is, circa 1860.

Re: "P" Button, Coins, an old Keen Kutter knife, and a couple questions.

Man, I like the sound of that. I just sent a message to PBK also to see if he knows anything about it. Thanks again Don. What Book would you reccomend for IDing buttons of this era, especially civil war?

I appreciate your time.
