PA detecting on land that used to be an iron ore mine

Hello All,

My sister just bought property in PA that used to have an iron ore mine on it.

How does one detect under these conditions? Doesn't the iron ore cause problems for the detector?

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes it will be Next to Impossable.

as detectors need an Iron free area to Ground Balance,
Ground Balancing there just won't happen.

You will Find large Objects , but I Don't see any detector working Properly there.

Well, its not totally impossible. If you have alot of time and a strong set of knees and a good back, you can dig all the targets in a large area, leaving it void of all targets. Then ground balance off that area, then discriminate against iron after that.
But, as I've said with another iron ore site, once you discriminate out the iron, you miss out on all the cool artifacts that was more than likely used.

I just remembered, Years ago I searched a City Park
in the Heart of Iron Furnace Country.

in fact the owner of the Iron Furnace had his Mansion there.
before it was turned into a park.

Neither a Whites 6000-series 2

or a Sovereign XS-2

would pick up coins more then 1" deep.

and I couldn't keep a Operating tone.

and everyone I discussed this with, DFX & Explorer users,
among others said they had the same happen

I was afraid that it would be almost useless to try. It's too bad because the house was built in 1870 and it sits on 5 acres. I thought that it would be a GREAT place to detect until I found out about the iron ore mine.

There are also graves on the property. The writing on the stones has worn away.

There are also old foundations.

Well it won't hurt to Try.

Maby you'll get lucky & the Iron content will not be as High.

Don't let us Turn you away completly.

I live in SC, so I won't be going there for at least a few months.

I guess that there are no worries about the place being detected out! Everything must still be there!

Absolutely.

And the finds could date back to the 1700s

Most of the Furnaces around me date to Early 1800's

sorry, I can tell you that's in Upper Milford Township, in Lehigh County.

and there are Historical Places in that area.
In fact it is most likely Very Historical.
sounds like a Great place to search.

But it's a little Fruther from me then My Research extends.

Not being from the area I havn't been able to Question anyone local
on this, However a short Distance North of Old Zionsville,
Between EMMANS & MACUNGIE
there is supposed to be, or WAS a place known as the "Haunted House"
a Farmer is said to have Buried Gold coins sometime before 1930
on his property & then Died.

SHIRMMERTOWN also just North of Old Zionsville is Listed as a "Near Ghost Town"

and Yes Indian artifacts Should be Every where.
