Pair Of Hinged Stirrups

hey y'all its me agin.....i bought this pair of old stirrups at the flea market from the same guy i got the buttons from.......these are kinda strange as they are hunged to open one side for some reason....any help with age and reasons for opening would be greatly appreciated

That's in case you fall off your horse you don't get hung up in the stirrup and dragged. Been there, done that. Trust me, it really sucks.
