Panning/Sluicing in Montgomery County, MD

I was wondering if any of you guys have ever panned in Montgomery County, MD streams? Apparently there are several claims in the county and gold has been found in most of the streams. The problem is that there is no public stream access anywhere in the county...as far as I know, and I haven't mastered the art of asking permission for use of private property.

Can any of you experts give me some tips on how to ask permission, what to say, etc?
