Is it necessary to see the "complete" date of a coin? For example, I just found a Buff with the first two digits barely visable and the last two digits are clean. 1920. Would this be considered a G-4? I can "make out the date" but not sure it would even grade G-4. There is no mint mark on the reverse. A very common Buff, but I like them nonetheless.

OMG apush - I was just going to ask the same question myself!!! I just bought a partial collection from a guy on craigslist and had 215 buffs in the lot, some VG but most were 'no dates'. In the four rolls of no dates I can make out one that is a 1918D, I am wondering too if you look at it you can see the date and mintmark and the legends are readable is it considered G-4? If so, that is an $18 find and I only paid $35 for the 215 buffs!

Apush, my photograde book describes G-4 as the date being readable but some of the numbers will be well worn. On AG-3 only a partial date will show but date must be recognizable. Hope this helps. Can you post a pic of it?

As soon as Mr. Apush gets home, I will post a pic. He got one of those "new fancy type" phones that really takes top-notch pics.

Apush,
Mountainman is correct. There is a grade of "About good". There are also coins that grade about good in the obverse and G-4 in the reverse. When in doubt, take them to the next show you attend and have a pro take a look at it. All the same....it's worth keeping.
