I love to return to old sites that I thought were hunted out because I take it as a challenge to see if we left something behind. Well this trip back to a hunted property paid off for us this time. Coming off the best privy we have ever dug we were itching to get back out and do some more.
So I figured we might as well go back to a nice vacant lot where we had secured permission to dig, again! Started out at an area that I thought I may have felt a privy a couple years prior. So I probed it again and felt for sure that it was indeed a bonified privy. So lets get down and dirty here
We had the property marked for any utilities that may be under ground. Seeing as we dig up to around 8 feet deep. But I also know that its not an exact science to locate the gas lines. Even the utility company will tell you they can't mark em all. So we have to be very careful when digging, especially when we are close to the alleys. So we started to dig and sure enough there was a gas line that was not marked. Luckily we did not cut it and we were very careful as the line was going right through the middle of the privy. It sure made it much harder to dig, but I think that was a blessing because we were more cautious around the bottle area. At about 5 feet down Don found a nice amber blob beer. Thinking back I believe it was our first amber beer of this year. Then I located one and an aqua beer as well. Several medicines appeared and some nice local root beer mix bottle. Then Don started to pull out one beer after another. Crazy how you can dig all season and not find an undamaged one, but this pit yielded 7 blob beers, numerous medicines and a very nice Hops and Malt Bitters in a cabin style. First one of these we have ever found. Some nice little trinkets like a huge bottle stopper and some marbles made it to the surface.
It was a loaded pit as we say and well worth the trip back. Overall we found some beers that we have never found whole. We also located a very ornate pitcher that was broken but we found all the pieces so that Don can attempt to put it back together. Lastly I pulled out a small pistol or cap gun. Too hard to tell after 120 years in a privy. Hopefully it was not used in a crime
I don't believe there are fingerprints on it, oh if we only knew the real story! Cool finds, a great late summer day of digging and smiles on our faces for another great pit. We can't beat that. Good luck out there and be extra careful if you dig as deep as we do. Be safe as always. jgas
