This is a peace medallion my grandfather found when he was young working construction he was putting in guard rail post and found it! He gave to my mom so she has it now! thomas Jefferson is on the front the date is 1801 & on the back is a white man& Indian shaking hands& at the top is a tomahawk & peace pipe it is a really neat piece I think it's made of brass!

There are two types of Peace Medals. The Silver ones that guys like Lewis & Clark took out and gave to different Chiefs in different sizes (yours looks like the 3" midsize.) Later on the US mint made bronze copies for people to collect. Since they weren't money, there was no issue with them using the original dies and dates on later examples.

They were very popular in the early 1900's, but think of it more like an antique vs an indian artifact.
