Thanks for posting. I love the penny threads. Looks like a good haul. I found a canadian like that one with the bird on it awhile back havent looked into it but it is a beauty of a coin.

A word of advise if you are hand sorting. Pull the "s" mints out seperate from the copper. they hold a bit of a premium and are some of the harder holes to fill in the folders. They are from 68-74. TO put into perspective how hard they are to find in circ. I have only found a small handful out of around $200 searched and I still have a couple years that I havent found one of yet. But its just a heads up you may not care either way.

Keep posting your penny finds though soem of us love them:-)

do you guys think most of the coppers will eventually be pulled out by collectors? kinda similar to silver?

copper is worth way less of course, but think there will be a shortage in the next 10 years or so of copper pennies?

I honestly do johloh. The percentages of the big sorters are already dropping and there is rumors that coinstar is having brinks sort out the copper from their coins. If you are interested check out the articles and forum on http://www.realcent.com. Im saving my coppers for the numismatistic value later on if melt ban is liftd there will be quite a few people melting. Either way your not out anythign but time. I am going to look for wheats and canadians anyway so I might aswell save the coppers too.

There are rumors that Brinks/Coinstar is pulling copper themselves. As well as a lot of speculators and little guys like us.

I've only got like $100 face in copper myself, but there are other people on this site with close to a grand in face, and TNET represents only a small small part of all the people out there picking out and hoarding this stuff. Give it time and our yeilds will fall DRASTICALLY.

Nice work on the finds. That bird one is a centennial or sequentenial or some-such. One of there anniversary coins. Canada puts out A LOT of them. 100 years... 150 years... etc. etc. Whereas we only really have the bicentennial coins.

It is a cool looking coin though... nice to not see a maple leaf for a change lol.

I'll keep an eye out for those 68-74S

Thanks for the info on the bird penny, it was fun to find something different.

Johloh, yes collectors are pulling them out of circulation like crazy. In the future I dont think it is crazy to think copper pennies will sell at 10x face value. I foresee $50 bags of pennies selling for $500. Well maybe I am crazy but I am stashing away some copper for retirement...20-30yr away.

klava... the S mint coins go MUCH further back then just the mid 60's. Or do you only save the newer ones or something?

I only save the S mints that are also wheats, and then I throw the rest of them back. Too many pennies as it is... not worth to me to save every S min I see. =(

Still think you should post that canadian change thing btw.

~Dave

LOL yeah. Well I hope no one on this forum is throwing away wheats therefore I didnt want to insult anyones intelligence by mentioning s mint wheats. As far as the s proofs go they are very rare as far as my searching goes anyway. Plus Id think they would stick out. I only mentioned the cu s mints since the person was pulling cu out anyway.

Yeah I need to get around to posting about the canadians.

I'm going to continue to pull copper until next year at the very least. When it gets too minimal to be worth it, I'll stop. But for now, my Ryedale copper sorter is working when I get time, and I have about $1,260 in copper pennies so far. About 126,000 of them. :-)

I personally think that with the 100 year anniversary of the Lincoln penny next year, and all the talk about the pennies that will go on, that there will be a lot more people starting ot pull the copper, and I think by the end of 2009 the ratios will be single digits for all of us. And that's when I'll stop searching, and move on to something else. For now though, I'm striking while the opportunity is still there.

Changing topics - I do NOT sort out the S's from the late 60s and early 70s. I find a LOT of them. I took some out, but then decided to only sort out the wheats (Have about 3,400 so far). And the IHs I hvae of course. LOL.

I'm holding all my copper though.

Today's Penny search:

$5 in pennies (poor crher right now)

11 - 1982 (will weigh later for copper)

2 - canadian

4 - wheaties 1937, 1942, 1944 and 1958D

124 coppers

so including wheatis and up to 1981 I had a 25.6% copper ratio. I might have to keep searching pennies in my area as this seems to be a pretty high ratio. Hopefully have a ryedale soon. As for the poorness of my searching I wish I could talk the wife into letting me use some of our savings to search halves. I have $400 sitting in a safe right now not doing anything begging to be converted into halves and silver, but you gotta keep the better half happy. But for now I'll have to settle for searching pennies then working up as I get my own little stash of cash to CRH with.
