Hi all,
Haven't posted in a while but been reading. Last box of pennies got me the usual wheats. The best find was a 1999 type II cent. I've been looking for 1 for the last 5 years. According to Ken Potter's website there are only around 200 known in all grades. I'll send this off to have it graded for sure. Also checked the magnet on the coin counter at my bank today and got a 1978 Canadian quarter. Will let you know the grade of the cent when I get it back. Saw one like it on ebay with a buy it now price of $399.99.

OK, I don't have a red book, a blue book or a cherry pickers guides so what is a 1999 type II cent ???

Congrats on finding one since so few were made.

The type II's go like this -

In 1993 the mint started using slightly changed dies for the reverse of all proof cents (S mints). The old die shows the AM in America so close that they're just about touching at the base. The new style has a definite space between the base of the letters. All P & D cents from 1993 on have the closely spaced AM, but a few years were accidentally made with the new proof dies (with the AM spaced apart). The designer's initals are also slightly different in the new style. To date only 1998, 1999 & 2000 pennies have been found with the "wide AM" variety.

But get this. Recently a 1992 with a "close AM" has been found. All pre-1993 pennies are the "wide" style. Since the change took place in 1993, a 1992 with a "close AM" is probably a prototype test for the new design.

So check all pennies 1993-present for "wide AM" varieties and check 1992's for a "close AM".

Interesting info... thanks for sharing that with us!

Thats a nice find! It is deffinatly worth something especialy if it grades high! HH

Immy,
Is this something to look for in 1994 and later years, or is it just something to watch for in 1992 and 1993 pennies? Has it actually been found in 1994 and later years?
Thanks and HH,
Bob

Bob, you can look for the "wide AM" in any year from 1993 to the present. So far the only years found with it are 1998, 1999 & 2000, but as an article inCoin World said, who's to say you won't find the next undiscovered year?

Thanks for the info, Immy. Fortunately, I still have most of my zincs.
I have approximately half a box to search through (again) with something new to look for.
Love this hobby! ;D
HH,
Bob
