Penny shaved or clipped into dime slug

I've found 2 of these in the last ~3-4 weeks, including this example yesterday. I use to not know what these were and just figured they were some sort of unexplained oddity. After some time I figured out that they are copper cents ground or clipped into the size of dime with the intent of fooling a vending machine. Most of the examples I find are from the '40's to the early '60's. The attached example is the latest one I've found. Please post any other examples you may have found. Should also note I find these almost exclusively in reject chutes and trays.

I could see that working on a 1960s candy machine , I used plastic bingo chips to get candy bars from a machine at the local barbershop as a young teen , it was the kind of machine you place the coin in the slot and push in the handle.The kind often seen on old coin op washing machines. those chips were the exact size of a dime. thanks for sharing ,it brought back a memory long forgotten.

Somebody with idle time on their hands, files, grinds down etc., to the same size as a dime; go to a bank with a lobby coin machine, and presto, just increased their cash by 1000%. I would see many like that in dime bags that I would bet at one of my branch banks.
Definitely not PMD, but counterfeiting coin manipulation, call the FBI.

Could mow a lawn and make ten times more than the time to file down a penny. Also in the 60s you had to take a little off the sides also. ........how'd I know that

I found 3 of those in my last dime bag. All were pre-74, figured they were "cheaters", yet somehow when I exchanged the bag they went through as cents, so... Makes up for the quarter and nickel I found in with my cents I guess ;-)

reject them all. I’ve never found one in a bag or roll, and only found them in reject trays.

I remember doing this once or twice as a kid. Didnt take long at all, just rubbed it on the sidewalk for a few minutes until I had the right size to get that Payday Bar or Reeses Cup

I just pulled 4 dimes from my last cent bag, so I'm back in the black! I think my CU's coin machine isn't exactly the best, I also pulled 21 canadians.

Welcome to the forum. Yours appears to have been subjected to a corrosive material. What does the obverse look like?

About 3 years ago I hunted a place, where I found maybe 20 or so toasted mini-wheats.
Shaved down, most smaller than a dime...could never figure out why. Guess prolly kids screwing around.

Couple of years ago while detecting an old church I found an IH penny the "exact" size diameter of a dime. After finding it, I thought it looked a bit weird.
