Perfect rock hole

Not sure if it’s anything, but was definitely of interest. This rock on a mountaintop had a perfect hole in the middle… like an ice cream scoop had dug it out. Maybe four inches deep. Not near any water, or at least a half mile from the nearest.

Did you clean it out? What did the bottom look like?

Is it a receptacle for one of those bronze surveyor benchmarks ? They are on Mt tops in NY and also get stolen..
