Persistence pays dividends

Started my detecting day at 11:00 a.m. Spent several hours swinging and several miles driving. By late afternoon I had nothing desirable to show for my efforts. So I decided to go back to the old school where I had some luck a couple of weeks ago. An hour before sunset...BINGO!



Found this gorgeous 1864 IHP...no L.
Kept after it and just as darkness was falling...



added this 1860 Fatty IHP. She's got a little cancer but I'm hoping I can cure her of it with a little electrolysis.

These came from the same school where a couple weeks ago I was stumped by finding a couple 1863 coins because the school was built in the early 1900s. A little research reveals that the early 1900s school was built on the same site as the previous school which stood on that lot for at least 3 previous decades, which was common practice, at least in Michigan. So now it makes sense. I'm sure I'll be back on occasion this summer to see what other secrets this yard is hiding.

I’ve noticed other coppers from certain parts of MI come out of the ground in great shape. Whatever the reason, you’re lucky!

I love it when an old, productive site keeps giving up coins. Your 1864 IHP is in fantastic shape! Great looking coin. Congrats.

Yeah, the soil ranges from sandy to clay depending where you are, and can sometimes vary within a limited area. I find that the sandier soils usually produce the best preserved coins. Because of better drainage?
