A buddy of mine found a pewter flat button with a nonferrous shank. The button is 17mm across and has a 6-point star in the center with smaller stars around the perimeter. The back has writing on it too. Any help with identification/timeframe military/civilian is greatly appreciated.

I have never seen a pewter button with backmarks before. Probably 1790's, maybe early 1800's. I heard that they switched to iron shanks on pewter buttons by 1800 though.

There were a variety of 18th century/colonial STAR buttons, but I have never seen one with a backmark either. Is it white metal by any chance?

There's tons. Just about every British pewter military button that dates after the Rev War has a backmark.

Is a little out of the norm if it's a civilian button with a backmark, but not too surprising,
