I have found this type of button in the past with embossing on the front indicating a military button. But this one has nothing on the front, but could it be military in origin?

Your button is not military in origin. That type was manufactured for use on civilian clothing... but we know some did get used on local Militia uniforms when the unit's members could not afford State Seal or City Seal buttons.

Were buttons like these manufactured in the early 19th Century?

Yes, according to various button books and "serious" archeological websites, buttons of that type were made in the latter 1700s into the early 1800s. See the charts/diagrams below.
