GB,
In CA along the main rivers and some small streams I look for:
Old Cut marks on trees and plants, like a cut off limb
Pottery pieces
Old rusty cans
Steel Cables
Nuts and bolts in the streams
Once I climbed a tree to hang my food bag in and in the distance I noticed a very large crash box to a very large dredge, it was up in the forest a long way from the river
Coming across an old trail
Length's of flume pipes
Divets on a hillside in the area of a stream or at a trailhead, this would be where a group of miners slept
Any size dug pit
A tin can nailed to a tree, usually with claim papers inside, be sure to put them back after you've read them
Old tiny cabin way and heck gone from anywhere

But the old dark cuts on branches of trees and plants is an indicator someone else has been there. The darker the color of the cut should indicate its age, darker being older. Other things are just too obvious like a ten stamp mill........63bkpkr
