Piecework.
Here's something some of you may want to try as it's worked out pretty well for me in recent years. I call it, “piecework” because that's basically what I've been doing in my old local city park.
Now, I use the 6” coil on my Equinox and I'm always in the gold mode for many of the reasons I've referenced before and likewise I'm always running a slow recovery speed. Sensitivity is always around 20.
So in the beginning I target just the 24 – 40 range, notching out everything else, this allows me to target just dimes and quarters and any old silver or copper coins that I might come across. And then I proceed to hunt smaller selected areas in very tight and well-defined grids, or paralleling paths. Once I've recovered all of the dimes, quarters, and other targets that fall into my search profile I'll change my notch selections so that I'm only targeting items in the 11,12,13,14 range, this allowing me to focus on items like nickels and those other items that fall within this range and then I'll hunt those same exact grids and/or parallel paths again. This is when those gold rings and other such items can begin to be encountered.
And last, but not least, once the above is done I'll change my search profile again so that I'm only targeting those items in the 17 to 21 range, and then I'll hunt those same exact grids and parallel paths again, which is generally when most of the gold and silver jewelry items are recovered.
Why do I do it this way? Because this park is close to home and it allows me to kill an hour or two whenever the mood comes over me. Not only that, but it allows me to pick through all of the trash over a long period of time rather then trying to do it all at once. I'm just getting too old for the prior and I have the time, and I actually think it's far more productive if one has the patience.
Yes, I'm skipping the 15-16 range due to the tremendous amount of pull-tabs that dominate this range and I'm probably missing a few good recoveries in the process but I fell it's a fair sacrifice.
Just thought I'd pass it along for those of you who have a similar situation or an old city park like mine to pick through. I can't do the rabbit thing anymore so I've adopted the turtle strategy......
