Hello all,
I am a complete newbie and have a question about pinpointers. The question is; should I get one and what would be the benefits? I live in Destin, FL and will be doing most of my detecting on the beach and in shallow salt water. I purchased a Minelab Excal 1000 which will be in my hands by Monday afternoon. I don't know if it makes a difference, but our beaches are composed of very soft white sand and our water is super clear.
Thanks,
John

Hello John,
Welcome to the hobby. Your Excal 1000 is a great detector and worth every cent you paid for it. It should pay for it self in no time if you go out hunting at all. Do you need a pinpointer? If your just going to hunt the beach and some water I'd say no. But if you stray onto grass, it could come in handy to stick down in your hole to see if the target is still there or on the side of the hole. Hint: If you do have to dig a hole in grass, put the plug/soil on a small rag so you can dump all the dirt back in the hole to be neat. Mostly recent targets in grass can be retreived with a screw driver. However I prefer a bayonet since it has a center point and can wedge into a ring instead of poking around it fifty times.
Beach hunting calls for a sand scoop. There are many types and you may need more that one type. One shove type like "The Scoop" for in the water and one for dry sand that has a wire mesh to sift the sand. A long handle on both is necessary.
Excal adjustments: Start out by finding a clear spot on the ground with no targets. Lay down a few different targets like coins, pennies, pulltabs types, and a small white gold and yellow gold ring and scan to see where they drop out of discrimination. I run mine on zero anyway. Oh yeah, the Excal pinpoints at the top and bottom edge of the coil, not really needed when your scoop covers so much ground.

I couldn't live without my pinpointer! Even at the beach it makes finding the target so much easier. I have an Automax V2, but I wouldn't put it in the water. Good luck!

I don't kow of an underwater pinpointer but it would be handy in shallow water. I went to a recent club sponsored water hunt and spent too much time groping around for the targets that I knew were right on top of the sandy bottom. All of the pinpointers I have seen would fry the electronics if totally submerged. With the V2 you can submerge the tip with no danger. jimakaks
