New guy here with a 2 week old platinum. I am in a trashy area and today I notched every thing out except zinc dimes quarters. I probably dug up 20 nails 30 pull tabs 5 bottle caps 4 brass rifle shells 3 bullets and other metal junk. With all of this stuff notched, why am I still picking it up? Ground balance was done. Sens at 7. Its making me crazy. Could it be the machine or am I doing something wrong? No matter what I notch Im still getting all the iron and aluminium trash. Thanks, Rick:dontknow:

I have a BH-P also turn your sens dwn to 5 or 6 and pay more attention to the number, I dig everything over 40. Everything under 40 is usually rusted iron from my limited experience. Unfortunately your gonna get allum, pull tabs, so on and so forth but dig it anyways. I found a buff nickel hitting as a pull tab. Trash is just part of the game my friend, dont give up, she'll hit for you. I dug 3 Civil war buttons just today along with several civil war brass rivets, all hit as either pull tabs or zinc.

I've got a platinum as well. I had my sensitivity on 6 and discriminated out everything but dime and quarter. Pulled an old 5 gallon bucket from about 10" down in my backyard today. It was a PITA to dig that sucker but it came to a point that I was determined to get that sucker out. What I did notice was after I realized it was a bucket I decided to drop my descrim back down to include everything. It was still chiming off as a dime but it was also hitting as iron. My new plan is going to turn the sensitivity down to 5 and not discriminate. I will then only dig the truly solid single reading numbers. Not sure if that is the answer but anything is better than getting suckered into another 5 gallon pail.

Why am I getting 80s and 90s and high tones on junk like nails and pull tabs even when they are notched. Why notch anything if the machine is still going to pick that stuff up and give you the high and tell you that is dimes or quarters. I dont think this machine is working. Iam calling the factory monday, it just dosent make sense to me. Are you telling me that I am getting these these high readings that are notched because my sens is on 7? It should not even be reading iron. When I dig the plug that the machine said was dimes or quarters reading low to mid 90s it will nails or other trash that was notched. This has been going on since I got the machine. Thanks Rick

Not sure what to tell ya as I've only got an hr on my machine. I'm totally new to this so I'm still figuring it out too. I think my machine was hitting on the pail as it was huge and had a couple different metals on it. Have you air tested nails and such? I can say my machine tells me what it is when air testing. The reason I'm going to turn my sensitivity down is it sometimes gets a bit wacky as my yard is FULL of trash. If I were on a virgin sight with very little trash I'd probably try the sensitivity on 7 but not in my yard. Who knows though, I might be way off base.

Yes I air tested and when I notch everything except dimes quarters it still hits on iron and bottle caps. I dont think it should hit on them if they were notched. Im new to this also. dont know why a nail would register in the 90s with iron notched. Im calling bounty hunter in the morning. Maby they can explain it to me. Rick

Yeah im not sure what you have going on there, I know that mine will also jump around if its a large iron object or if its really close to the surface I dug a barrel loop yesterday that was jumping all over the place low 20s all the way up to 80s. I had a feeling it was crap but wanted to be sure i wasnt passing on a good find laying next a piece of iron. What i have found helps is if it starts doing the funky chicken telling you theres everything burried there, move over to a dry spot and ground balance it then pass it over the area again mine sometimes will only read the iron on the hit after that. As far as air testing, yeah i would call BH, my air test was perfect, it read a dime as a dime, a quarter as a quarter, a nail as scrap, a pull tap as pull tap, etc. so yeah sounds like you might have an issue with your machine. Can you respond to the thread though with whatever BH tells you. Thanks

Rob

I have the platinum also and mine acts crazy like that at times had the cable not plugged in all the way but it still hits big iron if its dis out but does fine on nails if I dis everything up to zinc and notch in nickles set sensitivity at 6 and pay attention to the numbers it pretty much right on what it says of course I ground balance have noticed that it needs to have time to adjust to change in tempature from house to outdoors every once in awhile it will go crazy or stop detectin which usually shutting it off and restarting seems to correct the problem I know none this probably helps but thats my experience with it so far probably have maybe 20 hours on it thanks for reading let know what bounty hunter said please take care happy hunting

Update. I sent it back for a refund. Thanks for listining. Rick

Rick. What're you going for now?

I have an Etrac and bought my 13 yr old son a BH Platinum. I am really impressed with the Platinum, it's depth, recovery and target ID.

One way to determine trash from good signals, is when you encounter a good signal, move to the right and scan perpendicular to your first hit (cross pattern). If the target still rings good there is 75% chance to be an actual good target. Also, when you have a questionable signal, raise the coil while sweeping. If you are getting a ring tone 6 inches from the ground, it is less likely to be a coin.

With the Etrac, I always dig up trash, it is just part of the hunt.

Anyways, the Platinum is fast and discriminates well.

I have noticed sometimes the BH Platinum will start to act crazy by sounding off a whole bunch even though you sweep in the same place. To correct this problem, I will turn off the detector, wait for 3 seconds and turn back on, always works. In a site with allot of iron, you will have a hard time whether you are using a platinum or $2K machine. In this case, I will not discriminate anything at all, learn to love the bad signals (low grunts) and listen for the higher pitched tones. By using discrimination in a really trashy site you are really missing some good finds. Buy a set of headphones that allows you to raise or lower the sound so you won't go crazy.

MikeO, I liked your advice and reviews. I have been thinking about getting a Platinum to see if I improve on my finds from using a White's Classic II Coinmaster (older 3 9volt unit). I am a novice hunter and tired of digging only rusty iron and junk aluminum. It's probably just me though. Have you gotten any more experience with your platinum lately?

Hey CCC. Digging up trash is part of the game. Almost every detectorist will tell ya to dig every signal. It depends what you're hunting. If you want to dig less, only dig the high tones. Bad thing is you'll leave lots of other stuff behind. Though just because its a high tone it could still be a bigger piece of junk. Just put all the scrap in a pile, and at years end, recycle it. You'd easily come close to paying off platinum. Probably have a chunk of change left over.

I've been using my Plat. heavily ( daily or nearly) FOR A YEAR and while a littly quirky it's been great. I've found enough relics to fill a display room. I've detected small
items nearly a foot deep. It's a good overall detector, especially with the 11"DD coil upgrade. Very reliable and durable too. Drowned it twice and it's still fine.
Those who talk it down will do no better with any machine, cause it's their limitations, not the machine's
