Hello, I'm new here. I found this pretty rock in the garden while digging.

Could anyone help identify it please?

I've attached some pictures but it's hard to get a good picture, as the surface colours reflect a lot. The stone looks like a metallic black with petrol-like purple and green and gold shot through. Silver bits at edges. One corner transparent to light like smoky quartz. I was surprised to find if I hold it up against a bright light, I can see it's actually transparent inside like a murky green. 3.5cm long.

Curved on one side, then the other sides are like sliced through unevenly like it broke out of a rock.

Thank you

Thanks so much fuss, I think you are right. I looked up Slag and think that's it. As a wild guess, maybe the rounded bit is perhaps where it came out of the smelting vessel, though I don't know how the process works.

It's fun finding stuff and identifying it, I can see why it can become a hobby. I'll keep a look out for more.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to check out the pictures.

Peacock ore is beautiful, I just looked it up. Think not for my rock because mine is more metallic looking.

It does look glass-like but then why the rounded side.

I do tend towards slag. I looked up slag, and found there is such a thing as slag glass. If it is slag, I wonder what metals were being made.

Next time, I hope to find black opal :tongue3:

Here is a picture attempting to show it against a light, some more pictures showing how metallic it looks, and one showing the rounded side.

Chalcopyrite - interesting!

Mine is not unlike this picture I found online of Chalcopyrite.

Though mine is more colourful and transparent inside.
