Found this piece today and just tried doing a search online. I see some call it bar slate but maybe you can tell me more. It is just under 5" long, 3/4" at widest point and tapered at the ends. Banded slate and has a few scratches from the plows. What would this be used for specifically? Thanks for your help.

Just added this top picture after spraying with water, so you can see the beauty of the banded slate

I agree, it looks like a Bar Atl Atl Weight. Very cool find. In those last two pictures it looks like you can see where they started to put a groove on it.

Yeah, I seen that. Most of the pics I have seen on the internet had the groove more centered. These pics are a little distorted too, it is more slender than it looks in the pics. Thanks for the responses.

That's a great find anytime you find banded slate that well intact is a good thing Congrats!

Wow! Nice find

That is a super find, congratulations 👍

Are the bit ends ground down.Possibly a wood working tool...

Now thats easy on the eyes and a rare find if its a bar weight. Congrats

Thanks for all the comments. Found this at one of my sites near a nice small river. They decided to plant potatoes in the field this year and if you don't know already, they dig deeper and form mound rows for the potatoes. I assume that this one got flipped up from the depths and that is why it survived the plows over the years. I strongly believe it is a bar weight and as Grim Reaper noticed, there was a noticeable groove started on it so you would assume it attached to something instead of just being a tool. Thanks again

Heres maybe a little better view of it

I really doubt any of those scratches are from a plow. Looks like wear from its time. Very cool & I wonder about the artifacts they made of wood we have no way of knowing about anymore. Sift that area if possible. Congrats

What a great item and to think its purpose was for an atlatal or spear chunker before the bow and arrows arrival. Very nice and old. It is like colonial x20!
Thanks for sharing
