I found this button in a local park and I think it may be from the CW. i am not sure I am posting this correctly as it is my 2nd attempt and I can't even find the first one.
Always a nice find! It's a U.S. Army general service "eagle" button, a pattern that was in use from 1854 to 1901. There are lots of slight variations and different backmarks (name of the mfgr. of the button). You can find Civil War period examples at sites like these:
Thank you for the prompt reply. I was so eager to verify my find that I forgot to include details. The button was found in Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton VA. Staunton is nearly in the center of the Shenadoah Valley of Virginia, which was known as the bread basket of the Confederacy. Staunton was also a major railroad town during the war for Independence (Civil War). Several battles were fought near Staunton; in fact Stonewall was nearly captured in Port Republic which is about 17 miles from Staunton.
