Please Help. Strange Penny in Strange Roll / Wrapper

My girlfriend's Mom had this roll of wheat pennies for 15-20 years. In hopes of finding a 1909 she let me open it yesterday. Instead I found this 1942. Can anyone tell me what this is and if it is worth anything?

I have also included a picture of the flattened out roll that it came in but I don't think that really helps any.

It is hard to tell but the back is a silvery grey color.

As for the roll, it looks like it was sold through either a QVC-style show or a mail-order catalog. They'd pick out lower-grade coins from circulation and roll them up and sell them to non-collectors for $$ because a non-collector would think they'd either be rare or they'd have a shot at getting a rare coin (like a 1943 copper penny or 1909-S) usually these coins were cherry-picked before rolling, a bit like the "unsearched" rolls you find on eBay, some rolls might have been seeded with a good coin so that they can have a good testimonial though.
