It looks like a broken flint or jasper nodule. The type of rock used to make Stone Age tools.

IMO, ToddsPoint is correct... it is (red) Jasper. You can confirm that ID by doing a websearch for photos of Jasper. Also, see the Wikipedia entry for Jasper..
