Andenken is the first word. Andenken An Belgien

1914 -15 Memorial to Belgium

I can't really make out the fist letter (initial) either but I think it might be H. Meyerkord which could possibly be a soldiers name from the German side in WW1. The stamp in the middle might help id the watch company.

That's a really cool watch! A lot of history there to track down if you could ID the soldier and where he fought in Belgium.

Andenken is also a German work for "Keepsake" or "Souvenir"

1914 -15 Souvenir of Belgium
H. Meyerkord

There is a Henry J Meyerkord listed on ancestry.com, but I don't have a membership to look any further.

The USS Meyerkord was built in 1966 and decommisioned in 1991

I agree, definitely an H, if you google calligraphy H there it is. I find no listing of an SMS Meyerkord (German Ship). Bad time (for a Belgian) to be in Belgium... I wonder if it was a survivors watch or a German soldiers? About 2 million Fled Belgium with reports of great atrocities.

It could be a battle debris souvenir picked up during WWI and engraved later... if this were the case, it would make sense to say that the finder was possibly German or West European due to the language he had engraved. "H. Meyerkord".... if this were in reference to the US Navy ship, it would likely read "USS" and not "H", "H" has me thinking it's the finder's name.

I suppose you could do that Ancestry research, but I would start without mentioning the watch. Tell him you have run into a Meyerkord in your grandfather's notes and are wondering about it, if he seems legit after a while you can mention the watch then.
