Got out to an old abandon church that still stands. Found the pocket watch in the driveway. Love finding them but too bad this one is in such poor condition. Someone is trying to sell the same on on Ebay for $145, says its rare (Don't know myself)

Last time I spoke with the owner he suggested I poke around inside and check it out. Not much going on, everything is pretty much gone. However in an old filing cabinet I found these old books in various states of decay. I classify them from Bad to Bad X1 X2 X3. They seem to have all come from a baptist church in Newark NJ, However I am in southern VA. Maybe bought at a sale? The latest copyright date is 1905 and the earliest is 1853.

Sadly I don't think anything can be done with them. The ones that might be able to be restored I don't think will be worth the cost. Most of them had protective sleeves on them so the covers might be intact, but I haven't taken any of them off. I'll post the titles and info here and you good people can take a look. If anyone sees any that may be worth salvaging please let me know.

Sad to see old books go to waste like this.

Here are the titles.

Date Author Title
1880 Faye Huntingdon and Pansy That Boy Bob
Hesba Stretton Carola
1881 Rose Porter Our Saints
1872 Horatio Alger Phil the Fiddler
1885 Pansy In the Woods and Out
T.S. Arthur Ten Nights in a Bar Room and What I saw there
Jacob Abbott Rollo in Scotland
Next Things (very very bad condition, unsalvegable)
Hollis Cecils Summer
1873 Elisabeth Rundle Charles Against the Stream - The Story of a Heroic Age in England Authors Edition
1895 Mrs L T Meade Girls New and Old
1886 Willis Boyd Allen Silver Rags, The Pine Cone Stories
1853 Jacob Abbott Marco Pauls Adventures in the Persuit of Knowledge, The Springfield Armory
1905 Norma Duncan Dr, Grenfells Parish
1855 Jacob Abbot Harper's story books, Timboo and Fanny or the Art of Self Instruction
1902 Ralph Connor The Sky Pilot A tale of the Foothills
1894 Arthur H .... Chinese Characteristics

Anyway thanks for looking. I'll probably end up pulling out the nice illustrations and burning the rest, after checking for hidey things between the pages.

I don't know what to tell you. I think it would be fun to read books like that. Proper english written, I'm sure. Hopefully they won't be descarded. I'm sure there is someone who would want them ???

That book "Ten nights in a Bar room and what I saw there" (1885) should be an interesting read. :read2:

Hi Bob,
Maybe some are really valuable. Ya never know. I don't know anything about book values, but I do have a few old "boys adventure" books that I picked up because I think they're cool. If you don't get any offers, I'd give a few bucks each, plus shipping for any of these:
- In the Woods and Out
- Rollo in Scotland
- The Sky Pilot A tale of the Foothills

PM me if you're interested.

Kudos to you Bob for having saved these items from further decay! :notworthy:
I'd suggest you send an email or take these items to a "rare" bookstore in either . . .

Collectors Old Book Shop

or

Beacon Books of Ghent

Best of luck,

Maybe donate the books back to the Baptist Church in Newark (if still in existence) with your story.

I thought about that too, might make for a neat story.

Unless they hit me with a 160 year old fine. ;D

Give them a call first and then sent them a detailed email of what you posted here for us. They'll let you know if you have anything of value and that'll make the trip worth while for you.

Let us know how you make out with these Bob.
