Very nice arrow719. I love the types of small points that you guys have out west. Very cool styles and materials.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

The size is just perfect for drooling all over my keyboard, nice show!

Those are a joy to look at, the Great Basin is probably my favourite area of all, point from there are exquisit, I would so love to find 'gem' points. I've aquired a few points from there, The Gunthers, being my top favourite, Rose Springs,Cresent,Columbia Plateau. I've had collectors from out the GB say to me, one can get fed-up of Obsidien, just like our Quartz, but a least the Obsidien shows expert workmanship (flaking), Quartz rarely shows this.

Thankyou for showing us, their a pleasure to look at. I intend on getting red & purple obsidien for my GB collection.
Hopefully Shawn will post his obsidien frame, found in CA.

Molly.

Ugly...hideous. I can't see how anyone could appreciate those atrocities. Can I have them?

Thanks Molly :)

I do love the variety of materials out here. And yes I also get tired of obsidian and basalt sometimes but it's a good problem to have. There are areas in the Great Basin that are over 200 miles from the nearest obsidian source. You find a lot more agates, jaspers and cherts in these areas. I'd like to see the pieces you have from out this way sometime. I too LOVE Crescents!!! They are very hard to find but they are still out there. It's been two years since I found my last one, but it was a good one. I am due to find a new one already, LOL.

Obsidian comes in a lot of colors. I don't think I've seen purple yet, I bet it's beautiful!

I wouldn't like them if they were pretty. :tongue3: You can't have them, you have too many already!

WOW! :o The points in that third picture are beautiful! Are they really dark blue, or was it just something in the camera or lighting?

AF, It's black obsidien, but it does come in other colours, I do believe its all down to the cooling process to what colour it ends up.

lMAO Matt, Too funny. ;D

Yep Arrow, I'll post them, soon as I get chance..

Molly. :)

Here are a few, I need to dig the others out. ;D from my collection that is, not the ground.

Those are great! Is obsidian harder to knapp than flint, do you know?

Easier than most cherts, it's volcanic glass. I hate knapping it and bleed just looking at it. As a general rule, anything that will chip / fracture conchoidally like the edge of a coffee cup or glass when you nick it, knaps easiest. Many lesser quality materials were utilized by the abos in lithic poor areas, but they would acquire better materials if at all possible through trade or travel. Rougher materials like quartzites, Ryholite, shales and sometimes even better "looking" materials (like some coastal plains or even agates) will cause you to wear out an elbow beating on it, before making a point. Many quartzites work much better with a wooden billet than with antler or hammerstone.

It's just the lighting, they are all black.
